the old days

once upon a time…

1969 mustang 428 CJ 4 speed top loader…

owner was drunk and I was given the keys…

my buddys friend… but he wasn’t savvy on manual transmissions…

she fired off and I took it to the road… gently letting her warm up… after a few minutes the owner looked over at me and says… “you gonna stand on it or what”

you know what comes next…

tire smoke and all hell breaks loose…

this thing moves…

she winds out in 3rd and we are comming up on an S turn…

owner (lit like a christmas tree) turns to me and says “the brakes are kinda messed up”...

sho nuff…

as the last word rolled off his tongue I was going for some brake… and when I did the car went sideways heading into the S turn… I slapped second gear and brought the back of the car back in line as we came into the corner… tach jumped to 6k as we did a sort of drift move and settle down when the traction came back to her…

I powered through the latter part of the S and got a better feel for the brakes… I determined we were better off not using them.

then we hit the main drag of the strip…

a 68 mustang rolls up along side us…starts telling us how his car is wicked fast… 460 and a C6…

light comming up turns red…

the 68 mustang kicks it into nuetral and revs up…

we are both on the front line…

back seat passenger tells me hes got a lot more rear tire than we do.. owner says I bet he doesn’t have the rear gear we do….....

I start bring up the revs as the opposing light goes yellow… the 68 mustang gets up on the converter…

guy in the back seat calls the “go”... both cars jump through the intersection…

the 68 mustang gets the lead through the intersection and the 69’s tires break traction…

back pedal… back pedal…

the 69 hooks and it time to tap clutch and grab second…

neck and neck, half way…

time to get 3rd…

the 68 shifts and the pause is to long and the shift to 3rd is perfect…

the 69 gets the edge and keeps pulling…

4th gear is easy and the 68 has lost the battle…

...

this may or may not be fictional… heh… either way take the racing to the track…
