Legends: The man or the number?

Thursday March 20, 2008 @ 08:22 PM EDT

Well, talk about a change of subjects( Thank you) !
I read 3 different blogs about the #3.
I’m gonna be honest with you, if it wasn’t for video, I never would have seen Sr race a car at all.
I don’t worship or mourn him, but like wise, I have no ill will or malace to him. Simply put, he’s before my “nascar” time. I’m totally nuetral on Sr as a driver. Emotionally that is.
Yeah, I’ve read about his accoplishments and what not, but he’s still just another driver.
So, anyway, here’s my thoughts on the passing of the #3 to another driver.
Does the number make the driver or does the driver makle the number?
Which one brings that car to the checkers each week?
Which one gets the prominace of reconition?
Do you guys always blog about the #3 assuming that everybody knows what your talking about?
I’ve heard him called Dale, Dale Sr,Sr, The Intimidator, and The Man in Black. I never heard him called ” The number 3 driver, or #3. Get the point?
See, it seems to me that if you give too much credit to the number, thn you are also takingh credit from the driver.
Ok, look at Jr. he no longer drives the #8 car. Does that mean he suddenly just lost his talent? Does it mean that Martin ande Aric are suddenly gtreat drivers now?
My point is, that the number was just that. Nothing else! Dale Earnhardt Sr is the man that which the legend was born. Sr is the guy who had the talent, the ability and the passion. That number just hung out on the car.
If Sr had decided to switch teams for whatever reason( not saying he would) he would have changed numbers. Does that mean he would have left the talent behind?
See, to me, its a;ways the man, not the machine. Its notthe team or sponsor either. Just the man.
