I have noticed a lot of confusion about what tags are and how to use them here in the NASCAR.COM Community. Think of a tag as a simple category name…it is, more or less, a keyword. You can categorize your blogs, photos and videos with any tag that makes sense. Each tag is a web link leading to an index page listing all of the items associated with that tag.
Tags are a great way to keep your stuff loosely grouped. For example, you might want to tag all your Talladega pics AND your Talladega blog with the same tag “Dega08”. Then, when you click on that tag in your blog or on one of your photo pages, everything with that same tag will be found.
And now for advanced taggers…you might have a pic of Tony crossing the finish line yesterday. And maybe you wrote a blog about the controversial finish. You could tag them each with 2 different tags… “Dega08” and “Smoke”. The tag you choose to click on will determine which items are found. You might have some other, more general, pics or blogs about Tony tagged with “Smoke”.
Other Members of the Community can also tag your stuff…what makes sense to you as far as tagging goes may not make sense them or may not accomplish the grouping they are looking for. They might want to tag things with the word “inspirational” to group all the blogs, photos and videos that move them. These could be certain blogs by THUNDRSTRUCK, tab1956, frevrsup3;fan or OldSchool59. And maybe a few photos from GrannyD1951 and THUNDRSTRUCK.
I have tagged several of my blogs with “Community411”, this one included. Go ahead and click on that tag below and see what happens. You’ll see a common theme to the blogs that are found. Tags can be very useful if used properly.
And, finally…I want to give y’all a couple examples of how NOT to use tags. First, tags are not graffiti. While we all had a great time at Kit_Kat’s Celebrations blog the tags posted there are not proper usage. Second, to use tags in any way that violates the Community Standards is not cool. I can’t show you any examples of this issue because they all have been handled by either myself or the mods already. The biggest issue I have seen with these is hatred. Keep in mind that even though YOU can’t see who posted a tag, the mods and I can.
A good example of tags
I hope this helps. As usual, please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks LD20
I didn’t think the Tags were being used properly, but I never clicked on one to see what it did. I think they are very valuable when used properly. One way to eliminate improper use, would be to either prevent anyone but the author from Tagging something, or have anyone elses tags only be seen by the creator of the tag.

The Celebrations Blog
That blog should be an exception to the “rule”. We were on there for a week and having fun. Of course anything hateful should not be tolerated but for those that sat for hours it helped lighten the day. I love rules but sometimes there just needs to be an exception for the sake of morale.

It is quite...
silly that the creator of a blog cannot simply remove unwanted tags from their own blog. This is a function that is sorely needed, but somehow remains elusive. Sort of like goodyear producing a decent race tire.

To me
both the Tags and the Flags are useless features. I never pay attention to them. Especially on my own stuff. I get more out of the comments that people post than someone voting me one flag, or five flags for my blogs.
The tags may be a useful feature to some folks, but what I have seen them used for most is grafitti, and “hate-mongering”. All that does is make people upset.
I think that maybe you should take away the feature that allows other people to put tags on your stuff. The writer or poster should be the only one to put tags on their stuff.
