I wanted

Tuesday May 13, 2008 @ 01:38 PM EDT

to wait until at least today to write this blog. Wait until most race recaps are written and the attention begins to turn to the next race. So my step dad is out of town for a few weeks and usually I watch the races with few friends or on my own, most of my family do not like nascar at all. I watch every race I can and listen to races when they go to cable (my mom lives in the stone age and doesn’t have cable yet!! ) But I asked my mom if she would like to watch the race with me, kinda fitting with it being the Mothers day race. My mom who has no clue about racing said yea. So there we sat through pre race ceremonies, and interviews, and analysis and all the while I was waiting for her to get up and walk away. The green flagged waved and the first caution came out with Stewart and Sadler. She looked at me and said let the wrecking begin. I could only laugh because she seemed so amused by this. She asked me questions and and I explained things like the Darlington Stripe, Being loose on and tight off, I explained caution laps and race off pit road. And she seemed amused. She seemed more surprised that I knew as much as I have and I told her this. I love this sport. i love the fact that when the green flag waves I get butterflies in my stomach. I love what it represents and it’s history. I love the idea speed and the total control over loss of control. She never realized how long I have been watching this sport. She laughed when I cheered when Gordon took the lead. When Kyle won I threw a sock at the tv and we both started to laugh. I explained the chase and why it was so important for Gordon just to run well even without a win. She asked me about the race last year I went to and I think I have told her the story a hundred times but I don’t mind telling it again. I still got chills running down my arms. She said my eyes lit up when I talk about it. I told her think about your favorite thing to do, and amplify it thousand times thats what i felt. My mom asks how i can sit and watch this for hours and never get bored. I siad its not just watching, it is listening, to the drivers, to the crews, to the broadcaster. You learn something. I have learned something new every race. I have the drivers I can’t stand and my I have the drivers I root for. I don’t beleive you should insult another driver or another person for that matter in any case. I never wish anything bad on a driver.
I talked to her about my blogs and how much I enjoy writing about this sport and how nice it is to find a place where everyone feels the same way you do. Where you can complain about something and know someone will hear you. My mom asked me after half way, if there was a halftime show..I couldn’t help but laugh, she goes well every other sport has that. As we sat there and the hours went by and the laps were winding down she turned to me and said if I had know you loved this so much 10 years ago maybe we could have done something about that. I turned and said it’ never to late….She laughed and said tonight was fun..this was the best night I have had in awhile and I agreed. It was pretty good, nothing compares to sitting and enjoying something you love with someone you love more than anyone.
