I have tried fot the past couple of years to find the answer to this question. I have sent E-Mail to every broadcaster that covers NASCAR, every Media that covers our sport, and even NASCAR, but have never recieved any kind of an answer.
My Question Is:
Why do the cars one or more laps down during the race start on the inside of the lead lap cars on a restart?
To me it doesn’t seem fair. For example: With 4 cars one or more laps down, the 4th place car is now starting in the #8 position on track.
What is your opnion of the way they position lapped cars on the restart, and why?

it goes back
Before the lucky dog the cars a lap down would get a chance to race the leader to get the lap back. why they star on the bottom next to the leader not sure myself

Almost understand
I do understand the Lucky Dog. This has nothing to do with all of the other cars a lap or more down. The thing I DO NOT understand is why the other cars one or more laps down start next to the leader. If they are laps down, shouldn’t they have to start BEHIND the lead cars and NOT beside them?

Okay,
this is how I understand it. the driver who receives the Lucky Dog starts back on the lead lap, so back of the pack in the outside lane. The drivers one or more laps down have to have an opportunity to get their laps back, PLUS, they are starting in the same position as the leader, just one or more laps behind, thus they start up with the leaders in he inside lane. They start in position as well, so if the cars laps down start at position 24, they would line up 24th, 25th, 26th, etc in the inside lane. Does that make sense? I do remember reading this in one of my NASCAR trivia books, but for the life of me I can’t find it to give you the title/author/publisher, sorry. So if I have given incorrect info, blame my memory!

I believe
88 is right. However the broadcasters wouldn’t have a clue. It’s in the NASCAR rule book.

the first
car one lap down gets the LUCKY DOG award as long as he/she stays behind the leader
as far as the lapped cars lining up on the bottom, the latter wouldnt make sence.and if they all started at the end of the longest line there wouldnt be a lucky dog award I might not have explained right but I cant be that far off.
