I don't know if you're still checking in on this blog, but...
I served in the Navy from 1978 to 1982, and I also was told that after my discharge, I had nothing coming. My wife is aware of some changes that have happened, because of issues with her Dad had in the Army.
There is a VA hospital in Cheyenne – two hours away. Are you saying I should send them a copy of my DD-214 and check in with them?

My hubby uses his benifits
Hi Steve,
What a great idea to use this venue to reach a lot of people with this information. My husband was a small business owner until a couple of years ago. He was paying for his own health care. He had been with the same (but unamed) medical insurance company for many years. He is very healthy, active, and takes very good care of himself. However, he is 62 years old. His medical insurance kept raising his rateds every year, even though he rarley used it because he is healthy, and has never been in the hospital. When his premium went to over $500 a month (ridiculous) it just came to the point where we could no longer afford it. We cancelled his medical insurance, and hoped nothing would happen to him. We live in a small town on the coast of central CA. The closest Va clinic was Ventura about 3 hrs away. The VA finally opened a clinic in San Luis Obispo, which makes it so much easier for my husband to see VA doctors for most things right here near home. If he ever needs to be hosptilized, on a non-emergecy situation, he will have to go to Ventura or Los Angeles. Even with the price of gas, it is still cheaper than the other medical insurance. I hope that any Vet who doesn’t have medical insurance through work, etc., see’s this, and checks into their eligability. What a relief for us. We don’t have to worry about huge billls if something ever happens to him.
He didn’t realize he was eligible until a friend told him to check into it. You do have to advocated for yourself, as in most things. People need to keep moving forward, and don’t take no for an answere. If you had, you wouldn’t be sharing this important info. Thank you, stay well, and ALWAYS, thank Vets, and active duty personnel for their service.
