A modern day version of rip & read

Thursday July 17, 2008 @ 03:44 PM EDT

Many news outlets subscribe to services that send out transmissions of news and other facts to their subscribers on a minute by minute basis. In the early days of radio and to some extent even today organizations take this material and use it as their own because they’ve paid a subscription price to do so. In the media, this is referred to “rip and read”.

There seems to be a disturbing (to me anyway) trend in the number of lengthy blogs that are merely copied and pasted from other sites lately without any attribution whatsoever. I’m not a legal scholar in any way shape or form but I always thought that copying another persons words verbatim was an infringement upon their copyright, if not legally, then certainly morally. This whole situation is akin to the illegal practice of downloading an artists material to your computer or other electronic device to be entertained by it over and over and over again without having paid a dime for it, thereby denying the artist any iota of compensation for their trials and tribulations.
