I seem to have the need for speed! It all started when I was a baby going to the track with my family while my uncle raced. Although my racing roots are in NASCAR, as I got older I also ventured into SCCA and F1, Can-Am and Indy. In these other forms of racing, I watched Rick Mears, Gilles Villeneuve, AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti race. As well as some young buck named Stewart racing both the Indy 500 and the Coke-Cola 600 in the same day. Of course, while attending my uncle’s races I got to see many of the NASCAR greats. When I listen to Kyle Petty talk about the driver’s kids playing in the infield, brings back great memories for me.
Racing to me is not the car type but the driver’s ability to maneuver that car through the field, the crew chief using pit strategy and that unknown factor that can play a role on where a driver will finish.
I know this is the NASCAR community but try to keep an open mind with regard to other forms of racing and those drivers that have been successful before coming to NASCAR. As the open wheel drivers transition into NASCAR, I think they should run more races in the Nationwide series so they can familiarize themselves with the larger, heavier car. That said, there are some NASCAR trained drivers in both the NW and Sprint Cup series that can’t drive any better then the rookie open wheelers.
That’s it, I’ve got it BAD, I just love racing.

Great Blog!
Nice to know there are other people out there that truly enjoy the “art” of racing. I’m with you on all kinds of racing. I got so desperate this off season I was watching lawn mower and rototiller races. My kids said it was time to put me in “the home”.

Good Blog
I too love to watch different types of racing. Your words that really stood out to me were “drivers ability to maneuver the car thru the field” that’s also what I look for more than make, sponsor, etc. Nascar being 1st, Drifting and IRL. I’m waiting for Danica Patrick to get her 1st win.

I just love racing too.
I have watched other forms of racing and have enjoyed it but my first love for racing is NASCAR.
All drivers make the series interesting. And as all sports some are better than others.

Yeah Girl,
You DO got it bad. You ARE a TRUE race fan so how can anybody disagree with you? I’ll admit, at first I was not crazy about the open wheelers coming into Nascar but I changed my mind since then. Now I say, bring ‘em on and let’s see what they got. If they come into the door humble and willing to learn they may make it, else, it was not meant to be. If I was in charge, I too would make them run in the NAT series for a year or two before driving in the elite series of our sport. Great Blog and I hope a lot of members take the time to read it.

Heya Pug,
nice to read a blog with an open mind. Many of my friends are into racing (not really NASCAR, or NASTYCAR as they refer to it). It’s hard to explain to them whats soo attractive about this sport. Only way I ever get my point across to them is like this: Racing is racing, it don’t matter if its Formula 1, semi-trucks, go-karts, Stockies,...... it’s about the APEX!
P.S I’m into SCCA as well

Hey Pug
thanks for this blog.
You made me think twice. I am not a big fan of these open wheel guys coming in and competing with the nascar guys…..but I do believe they all need a chance. I agree with you that they should run more Nationwide (that hurt to type) series races to learn and get more experience…....thanks Pug!!!
Rock on!!
