After Shawn Taylor died, Joe was able to bring the team (Redskins) together during this tragedy. I think while helping others, he look at his own life, a realized how short life is and family is more important than football.
Locally (Washington,DC), it has been reported that Joe will still be an adviser to the Redskin organization. I suspect JD will continue to run JGR, but the Coach will be at the races and be able to have fun (or be the “father” figure or disciplinarian as needed.)
Quoted from the Washington Post:
“It was the toughest (season) for me,” Gibbs said Monday. “When you go through a season like that, for a while it’s kind of hard to re-grasp reality.”
Gibbs has also endured a personal crisis for a year. One of his grandsons, Taylor, was diagnosed with leukemia last January at the age of 2. Gibbs frequently talks lovingly about his “grandbabies,” and he made an overnight to North Carolina on Sunday to be with his family, interrupting the postseason routine of meetings that usually follow the final game of the season.
I’m not sure if little Taylor is JD’s or Coy’s son. I do know that Taylor was receiving treatment in Northern Virginia last winter. My son plays Junior ice hockey and one of his teammates also has leukemia and was being treated at the same facility. That player befriended Taylor and last season the hockey team presented him with a signed jersey. That player aged out of junior hockey and I have not been in touch with him since last spring.
Although, as a Redskin’s fan,and I will miss seeing Joe on the sidelines, I believe he has made the right decision for himself and his family.

Good Luck Joe
As a fellow fan, I join you in lamenting the fact Joe wont be there to guide the Redskins in 2008. Hopefully, Greg Williams will be named head coach and they will continue to strive for the excellence that Joe Gibbs so ably and modestly represented. I think that he will continue to defer to JD to lead JGR and I thank Joe Gibbs for the many years of leadership as a coach, a business owner, and, most importantly, as a human being. I hope for him nothing but the best in his new role in life and send my most sincere well wishes to his entire family, but especially his grandchild

I also
have a son who has gone through the leukemia regimen. I read a story about JD’s son Taylor in an issue of last years NASCAR Illustrated.
My son was seven when he was diagnosed, and finished up when he was 10. Taylor is very young, about two or three I think.
