A little late, but I know the answer
Essentially, there are 42 spots in the field for non past champions, the top 35 and 7 go-or-go-homers, the 43rd position is reserved for a past champion that needs a provisional. Since there was no need for a past champions provisional, it then goes to the top qualifying go-or-go-home driver who otherwise would not have made the race, in this case David Reutimann. Back in the day, if the past champion’s provisional wasn’t needed only 42 cars would start the race.

Hello!
I’m doing good. How about yourself? When you go to the main page of my profile, under the buddies box, click on “comments” and then click on “Post a Comment”. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
