I have noticed a lot of people longing for the good old days of NASCAR so I decided to do a bit of research
Here are some facts for the first 10 races of 1978
1978
Race 1- 4 cars on lead lap- 21 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 2- 2 cars on lead lap- 27 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 3- 2 cars on lead lap- 24 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 4- 3 cars on lead lap- 20 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 5- 1 cars on lead lap- 23 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 6- 1 cars on lead lap- 19 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 7- 2 cars on lead lap- 20 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 8- 2 cars on lead lap- 20 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 9- 1 cars on lead lap- 18 cars still running at the end of the race
Race 10- 2 cars on lead lap- 22 cars still running at the end of the race
I loved the grit and determination of the drivers back then but lets face the facts, the competition was not that great. I can only imagine what would be said if the first 10 races of this year had these results. Most of these races only had 30-35 cars start the race. Many were poorly attended. Races were not broadcasted on TV. As much complaining as I may do about the commercials and such I would be lost if I couldn’t watch on Sundays. The safety for the Drivers and fans is second to none. And yes, I even :::::gasp::::: like the COT car. I think that once the drivers and crew chiefs actually figure it out the racing will be amazing but right now they are going through that learning curve.
NASCAR has got to evolve or it will fade away into the sunset.

I thinx COT racing may look quite different if it weren’t for all that debris on the track…

The good Old Days,
When drivers worked on their own cars. When they hauled their own cars on open trailers, when they stayed in the pits and signed autographs, didn’t have a race to see who was first out of there after a race. I started watching in ‘69 when I was a kid. Car racing was a redneck sport. It was only real well known in the south (lots of tracks all over the country though). I love the safer new cars. Anything that protects and saves lives. Everyone is on an equal footing reagarding the new car. They all have to find their way. Through change we evolve. I LOVE CAR RACING.

you were only 7 back in the day… a baby.
You would have had to witness the type of hard nose racing those boys loved. And I agree that I too would be lost without Saturday and Sunday racing. I reserve my opinion on the car of today until I see the end of the learning curve… Have a great day young-un.
