Youngest of FANS

Tuesday December 11, 2007 @ 12:23 PM EST

I’m at home today, a rarity, because my 9 year old daughter is quite sick. She has not only strep throat, but also tonsilitis and infections in both ears. She’s on scookum antibiotics tho, so should be improving. Anyway, to pass the time, she and I are cuddling on the couch, computer on lap and the 1995 Tyson Holly Farms 400 at North Wilksboro Raceway on TV. Leading the first lap is Ted Musgrave. I already know who wins, it’s one of my favourite races, but my daughter has never watched it with me. She is recognizing all sorts of people tho, including Mark Martin, DW, Dale Sr. and yes, even a very young looking Jeff Gordon. What she isn’t understanding is where are the HANS devices? the Safety Barriers, the helmets on pit road? I’m surprised! She pays more attention to the “things” during the races than I thought!
It is truly amazing to see the progress our sport has made over the past 12 years. The race was broadcast by ESPN, with Ned Jarrett and BP in the booth, with Bill Weber and Jerry Punch in the pits and nary a woman to be seen. A Petty car is leading the race. The first spin is Jimmy Spencer and Geoff Bodine.
The drivers are strapped in, but there is nothing to protect their heads and the space they occupy seems huge, compared to the small capsules they sit in now.
At the beginning of this race they announced that all Jeff Gordon had to do was finish 7th or better in the last 5 races of this season and he would win the championship, irregardless of what Dale Earnhardt (2nd in points) did in those races.
It just goes to show you, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
