    Posse's Picks

    Hollywood Cemetery
Two U.S. Presidents, writer Ellen Glasgow, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Civil War Generals George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart, and thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers are all interred. Cherry and Albemarle Streets, Richmond, VA

    Monument Avenue
It’s the only street in the nation to be designated a National Historic Landmark. Gigantic statues of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and J.E.B. Stuart, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, explorer Matthew Fontaine Maury and Richmond native, philanthropist and tennis champion Arthur Ashe Jr. Start at Monument Ave and Lombardy St (Stuart Circle) in Richmond and proceed west to Roseneath Road to see them all.

    Richmond’s Canal Walk
The path runs along the north bank of the James River from Tredegar Iron Works at Fifth Street to 17th Street. Pedestrian entrances to the walk are located at Tredegar Iron Works, Seventh, 12th, 14th, 17th and Virginia streets (accessible to people with handicaps). Sidewalk markers along the walk’s 1.25-mile length note people and events associated with the area’s history. Restored Haxall and James River & Kanawha canals and the Canal Walk provide opportunities for waterfront strolling, canal boat rides with restaurants, shops, hotels and offices nearby.
Canal cruises – A 40 minute narrated tour. Sept. 4 through Sept. 28 Thursday through Saturday: Noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday: Noon to 5 p.m. weather permitting. For reservations and information, contact (804) 649-2800 or (804) 788-6466.

    Performance
Thursday 9/4/2008 John Boy & Billy appear along with the Marshall Tucker Band at The National downtown at Seventh & Broad streets. This is a great performance space as you can elect to stand on the main floor or sit in one of the 300 seats in the balcony (general admission, first come first served). The sound is first rate and the drink and food prices weren’t too outrageous.

    If you

are a history buff we have lots of rich Civil War history but our city leadership hides it because they dont want to make our past very public. They hope it will just go away. I will not get into why.

Our state capital in downtown Richmond has a great free tour to take if you have the time. Its the oldest capital building in the USA and has a very rich history that spans Thomas Jefferson as the man that designed and built it, Gen Lee that took the commision of the Military from our own President Jefferson Davis. It has what was built to be the tomb of Washington but was never used as a tomb for our First Pres. We host Monument Ave where you can see larger than life monuments to all our Civil War learders, Just east of us is Williamburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. Where we fought and won the Revolution in the late 1700’s.

About an hour to the west of the city we have the home of Thomas Jefferson “Monticello”, its a great tour to take with your family and is filled with American History.

Just west of downtown is the Fan District where you can find some of the best southern food in America. Send me an IM and I will email you a list of all our great places to eat and drink that is family friendly.

We have a great night life in the “Shockoe Bottom” in down town Richmond.

I dont think you can find a city in the US with a richer history than the old Capital of the South, my home. Richmond Virginia.
