Daytona!

Wednesday June 25, 2008 @ 11:10 AM EDT

Following this weekend’s race in New Hampshire, it’s back for another round at Daytona. The Saturday night race is the summer’s premier event under the lights, and Daytona is no joke when it comes to things to do. But what do you like in Daytona? Post your favorite stops and they’ll be included in Travel Log.

    New Smyrna Speedway

Okay, so it is not exactly directly in Daytona Beach, but it isn’t too far away. It is a 1/2 mile asphalt oval that was repaved in Janary of 2007 that has seen the likes of Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and others testing there this year. Mark Martin and his son also have raced there. It is banked at 23 degrees and is a great track to see some good local racing.

The best part is this year Tursday, July 3, 2008 they are having the Clyde Hart Memorial which is a Super Late Model Race of 125 laps that always has good car counts and great racing. In additon to that big race that night local racers of Pro-Trucks, Strictly Stock, and Sportsman cars will be running as well.

It is located 10 miles Spout of Daytona between I-4 (Exit 118 east) and I-95 (exit 249 West) at the intersection of SR 44 and SR 415 according to the site. You can also take Tomoka Farms Road which is near the superstretch of Daytona International Speedway all the way there too. If you do, New Smyrna Speedway will be on your right.

I’m not sure what time it starts, but it is in the evening, and worth checking out if you will be there Thursday evening!

The link to the website is: New Smyrna Speedway

Hubby and I will be there like we always are smile.png

    Sunrise At Daytona

Since birth. 1960, My home has been Virginia. Since 1973.
From Ormond Beach to Oak Hill. My home away from home.
The East Coast of Volusia County, Florida. As of last week.
I’ve made 149 trip to Volusia County. Whether flying or driving. Sometimes 2 weeks. Sometime 3 days. As of 10 days ago. For My Father in Laws funeral. I’ve spent three years of my life. In the cruising, South I – 95. “Next Five Exits” Daytona Area Beaches, zone.

    Mission 150. 160 Laps …Under the Lights… Next Week.

Over the years. Here’s what I’ve learned:

    I Love It!

When, My In Laws moved to Volusia County 22 years ago?
Who needs to spend 1500 bucks on a hotel room for 5 days on a race weekend ..that normally cost “beachfront”.. 45 bucks a night?
    Not Me!
My In Laws… Love Me… And they got a heated pool!

    The Chief of Police:
My age. He was command and control, at My son David’s graduation from New Smyrna Beach High School,
May 20th 2006 at the Ocean Center. The day Barbaro crashed.
    Mike Chitwood.
    Sort of Round.
    Sort of Funny.
    Sort of my friend.

    Speedweeks is too long:
Too many memomries.. A lot of good ones… a lot of bad ones.. In 2006 when Denny layed his virgin tracks @ Daytona.. in the win for the Bud Shoot Out… With a sea breeze…
Wind Chill. 17 degrees. Just off the plane.. I was there.
    In Virginia it was 46.

Sun Spot City… Speedweeks is too much time too get into trouble…Park the Bacardi.. Let someone sober drive! Screw the hotels! For Me? Stay at the In Laws… Wear Sunglasses. Or they will bust you!... or as I did… From the airport… take the Cab… slink to the mom in laws. It’s 60 bucks for the 20 minute cruise down I – 95 to Edgewater… and because she likes you… on race day… she’ll take you back to Daytona.. for free!!!

From My house in Va. to the Burger King in Volusia Square.
In front of the Kennels. Next to the Speedway. 777 miles.

Volusia Mall.. down the street.. across from the track.. Infront of the Mall.. Just off 92… Outback Steahouse!!!
You want to meet your hero?
You want an autograph? You want a photo op?
With 50 laps to go… any race… book a table.
    Outback Steakhouse!
Odds are he or she will be there!

My own Cole Trckle … Days Of Thunder … Moment.
The 1st ever truck race at Daytona?
Goeff Bodine tried to kill himself?
    Remember?... I got the pictures…
    His Halifax Medical Center…
Attending ICU Nurse…My Ex Wife Deborah.

    This July Race.
Three days.. in and out. This year. Can you say “Hancock”?
Next Friday is a National Holiday. The day before the race.

The coolest thing to do at Daytona…
Watch the weather on Daytona Channel 2… lst.
    Make sure it’s mission go?
    You need a cloudless morning!

    Wake Up 5:30 am.
    Get to the Beach.
    Sunrise 6:05 am.

    The sunrise!
    The Face of God!
    Clean and serene!
With a final thought of …
    Oh My God!
    In 14 hours…
Kick the tire and light the fire…
    We going racin’!
