Where can I go in Richmond?

Tuesday April 22, 2008 @ 02:11 PM EDT

Next weekend presents a refreshing aspect of Travel Log as I will be traveling to Richmond. Therefore, I will depend upon our readers once again to point me in the right direction.

Where do I need to go during my brief stay in Richmond?

Surely there’s interesting places to visit in the Commonwealth’s capital. Tell me where you go and I’ll drop it in Travel Log.

    The best free thing

is the Capitol Square Guided Tour. The first guided tour begins at 9 AM and last tour at commences at 4 PM.) On Sunday, guided tours are available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.. Free indoor guided tours last about one hour and include newly restored rooms that were not previously on tour. In addition to the Rotunda, Old House and Old Senate chambers, tour groups will usually see one of the present-day legislative chambers located in the wings (when the General Assembly is not in session) and a newly created committee room next to the south portico, renamed the Thomas Jefferson Room. Excellent for history buffs and entertaining to all. The phone number and general information can be found here

If you are into adventure travel there are class 1 through 4 rapids on the falls of the James river that runs through downtown Richmond, one public access site is on Tredegar street west of Fifth street. Sadly, the company that offered group rafting experiences on the river has closed.
    .
    .
Speaking of the area near 5th & Tredegar there’s the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar Ironworks. This is the spot where many a CSA cannon was made it’s at 500 Tredegar Street
    Richmond, VA 23219.
    They have a web site
    .
    .
Tredegar is very near Belle Isle a former Civil War era prison camp turned into a park, to get to the park you cross a foot bridge over the James river.

Speaking of the CSA, the Museum of the Confederacy is most interesting and it too is located downtown. Being from Chicago I was used to seeing all the GAR relics and always thought that the CSA artifacts had been destroyed. But that’s not the case as they are here at the museum! Here’s their web presence
