The biggest thing I see
Is todays fan is more concerned with the driver as opposed to seeing a good race. I wonder about people who say they are a fan of NASCAR and only talk about drivers.

you know
when I was a teenager the guys would take their cars ot to airport raod and race and were left to do so but today the kids aren’t as interested in the cars themselves because they would all land their butts in jail for doing that so the only racing they have is nascar at least around thses parts. Times have changed for todays generation what we were once allowed to do is in the past

Nascar
Defiently wouldnt be as big. Look at the N.H.R.A. They only show them on cable. And they do have big fan base. But there fan base in mostly built from old school fans. They do get new fans. But if they went to national T.V. They would probably explode. Then they would have to change the way they run there races. Right now you can walk right up to the cars in the pits and watch the crew work on them. Nascar was like that wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy back. But with the influx of fans. they had to do away with that for the reason of safety. Nascar wouldnt be where it is today if it wasnt for National T.V. Most of older fans were introduced to the sport by a family member or a friend who watched. I was introduced because I had a friend who drove a quater midget. His dad used to take me to the races with them. I also have always had a facsination for the automobile. So as I grew up. I followed all types of racing. I would stay home on sundays just to watch sports in general.

It goes
Back to Nascar didnt have as many changes as they have had in the past 7 years. Once they went to National T.V. in 01. The fans changed just as much as the sport. Now you have more people watching. A whole different fan came into the sport. A more of a lets treat this as party type of fan. Since we all know that people in general are always looking for an event to be able to “Let there hair down” kind of event. Whether it be auto racing, concerts, or even some sort of event that only comes around once or twice a year. Its not like your baseball team that visits the stadium anywhere from 50 to 60 times a year. But instead this is an event. So you will always have the ones who treat it just like that.

Ok I agree 3fan
but I guess what I’m thinking is the sport could have up to 5 different generations as fan of nascar and with each different generation hasn’t the sport changed and probably not to everybodys liking so why would a certin generation complain about the generation of today when they played a roll themselves in the change of the fan base.

Julie
I have to agree with some of the comments about the newer fans being whiners. Just this past February at California. As soon as Jr wrecked. Most of the Jr fans started leaving. Out of all the years that I have been watching. Not until about 5 or 6 years ago did I start to notice this new trend of fans leaving once there driver would crash out of a race.
As far as the ones who jump from driver to driver I dont agree. Because that has been going since I started watching. I don’t put the blame on Nascar. Because all they are trying to do is make the sport enjoyable for all fans new and old. I can also remember back when you could walk up to any driver and get a pic or an autograph. Its to bad when in this day and age that the drivers have to walk around with body guards because of the way the fans treat them.
They stick pens in their faces trying to get an autograph. Then they yell all kinds of garabge at them because maybe they didnt get what they wanted. And also with all the hatred that they show towards certain drivers. They cant take the chance that some irate fan will try to do something stupid. Im sure one of the problems is that Nascar grew alot faster then what they expected. So they started to take the same approach that the movie industry handles their stars.
The only thing that has really changed is society. You have more and more people of all age groups attending the races. Drug abuse is on the rise. Alcocholism is on the rise. Violence is on the rise. And all this filtered into the sport.
You have young people drinking who cant handle there liquor. They get violent and act stupid. Back in the day you didnt have 80 thousand to over 200 thousand fans attending races. So with the rising attendance. Comes all of these problems.

88,
i don’t have anything relly relative to add but I just wanted to say this: Sports evolve, look at Football. They use to run around with leather strapped to their heads for protection. You don’t see any football purists calling for that particular helmet to come back, it’s just not safe anymore. As far as NASCARs concerned, as long a you enjoy the races, thats all that should matter!
