JOY versus HAPPINESS...

Thursday July 17, 2008 @ 10:09 AM EDT

My reason and motivation for writing this blog is based on another NASCAR.com buddy who wrote a wonderful blog about happiness. Now, I am not taking anything away from hers and am not criticizing hers, just looking at it from another direction, complimenting her blog (hopefully) with my own feelings on the subject of happiness.

My take on life is this: happiness is based on “happenstances” which are circumstances we cannot control, things not always within our ability to control. These sorts of things are like, getting rear-ended and having to handle all the insurance dealings and getting your car fixed, or having a loved one die suddenly. This could be losing your job or having a tornado rip through your town and destroy all your earthly belongings. Or it could even be as simple as a commode that backs up (yuck) or your dog having the runs on your new carpet (double yuck!). Anyway, based on all of this, I choose a different route, because to tell you the truth, none of the above circumstances make me or any of us very happy. So I like to forget “happiness” and just jump for JOY, because true JOY comes from within oneself; in my case from my relationship with God, family and friends. So no matter what circumstances happen in my life, nothing can steal my joy because it is always there even in the midst of the storm (or the overflowing toilet, or the loss of a parent unexpectedly…I know about this one first hand…or catastrophic loss from a hurricane, or losing your dog you’ve had for 13 years…I know about this one too…). You see, if you have joy in the deep recesses of who you are, no matter what the situation is that you face, you can get through it…even with death, I know where I am going, so nothing on this earth that happens can destroy who I am…and with the case of departed loved ones (furry ones too!) nothing can take away those precious, precious memories. Those are mine to keep forever!

I hope my way of looking at this might help you in some way to understand that we all too often sweat the small stuff and we fret over what we cannot control….so just let it go and live in a state of constant JOY! Try it and see if it doesn’t make life easier to bear.

Now, I just gotta apply this to Jimmie not winning but one race this year! LOL
