The year: 2004. Jimmie Johnson was the points leader for many weeks; won 8 races that year; had 20 top five finishes; 23 top ten finishes; lead 1312 laps; led 2013.66 miles. He lost the championship to Kurt Busch by 8 points (yes, EIGHT points…), which is the closest margin of victory in NASCAR history!
There have been other drivers (Jimmie Johnson) who have made about the same impact; although they did not receive the same amount of hoopla, or should I say media attention over their success as has Kyle. Maybe that is due to the preference for bad boy images over good boy images.
So before we ride off into the sunset with Kyle holding the NASCAR cup championship, it might be better to tie the horse to the hitching post and not ride out of town just yet!

I agree...
I think Kyle is still too imature to win the chase. He will undoubtedly let his ego get the best of him and self destuct. Let’s see who’s who after Homestead!

I
have said it many times; when the Chase starts, it really is anyone’s games since the points pretty much start over again. Look at last year – Gordon had a big lead over everyone before the Chase started. So it is a “wait & see” game.

Chase 2007
Jeff Gordon had built up an insurmountable 300 + point cushion on the rest of the field and could very easily have coasted to this season’s championship had the dreaded “Chase for the Nextel Cup” never been created.
However, his lead was erased because of the new Chase championship formula. As a matter of fact, not only did he lose his advantage, he lost the overall top spot in the standings to his teammate Jimmie Johnson because he won more races in the last few weeks of the regular season.

Very good point!
And Likewise, Look at 2003. Kenseth won the Cup by winning only ONE race! That could easily be Jr or Jimmie again.

how true it is
as painful as 04 was,it was just a prelude to back to back championships…..kyle might be a great driver, but it takes a great team to win a championship.I can’t wait till the chase is on and Jimmie does it again. He has the best team in nascar. We’ll see what happens , but i know one thing….it’s gonna be great!
