Guess so. Wasn’t it just Christmas yesterday? Wasn’t Jeff Gordon just saying “it’s over” last week? Maybe not. It’s only January, boys and girls, and the grind is upon us already. Last week was testing. Next week is the media tour. Dot-commissar Duane Cross is already on us for Daytona 500 story ideas. When do we sleep? We don’t. We’re like the guy who makes the doughnuts.
Anyway, yours truly is going to try and blog a little on this community page – all right, I’m being ordered to do it – in the coming season. But life is so busy (cocktail parties, autograph sessions, piano recitals and the like), and we already write at least two opinion pieces a week for the main site, so we’re going to take a different tack on this. My plan is to make this more of a travelogue, to let you know what it’s like being in certain cities and certain tracks. That’s the plan, at least. We’ll see if it works.
So to get us started, we’ll go through how yours truly spent his offseason. Remember, this is a 10-month sport, so those of us with a few weeks of vacation have to take it in December. So after Homestead, Thanksgiving, and the banquet, the GF (now fiance) and I went to Vegas for a weekend to meet some friends. Had no idea it was Mayweather-Hatton fight weekend until we got there. The place was crazy, with singing, sign-waving Brits all over the place. Felt like a World Cup match.
Anyway, we did our usual stellar job at beating the wheel at roulette (system available for $29.95) but gave it all back in the sports book. Let’s just say that the Patriots have failed to cover something like six of the last seven weeks, and I was the exception. Penniless, we came home for a little while, then drove down to Orlando for a few days at the theme parks. High marks for the Aerosmith coaster at Disney-MGM. Just wish they didn’t have to play Aerosmith music.
And just like that, it was New Year’s and time for testing. Now the media tour beckons. Time to pack. See you on the road.

Welcome :)
to the nascar.com community – I’m sure you are going to love it here. As you are aware, people are so opinionated about nascar and aren’t afraid to let everyone know about it. I look forward to your blog – it will be interesting to get your perspective on things. I enjoy your column even though I don’t always agree with you – but thats probably what makes me like them!

Congrates on the fiance
Sounds like you had a good and busy off season. Well sounds like you guys and gals are heading in the right dirrection with letting us folks know whats going on at diffrent tracks and cities. Maybe we can use your info to better pick a track we would like to visit because maybe thereis more stuff to do or the food is better than other, whatever it might be. Sounds great and can’t wait to hear more.
