I was at the race with my dad and uncle when this happened… It was incredibly horrifiying and people didn’t know what to think. With no announcement pertaining to the news of Scott, people were confused and dreaded the worst, with rumors flying around about the news. With heavy hearts, the race-goers assumed “If there’s no news, then it’s not good.” It was an awful sight; I was sitting on the far side of the track in the video, and as soon as a I saw the first explosion and the debris shoot 75-100 feet in the air, everyone jumped up to see what was happening. The second explosion was unimaginable, something that would only be seen in the movies. You could only think, How could anyone survive a thing like that? People die all the time in regular cars from collisions on a scale 1000 times smaller than that; everyone guessed Scott either underwent a life-altering injury, or died a tragic death. As a 13-year old boy, I do some heavy thinking of things I do not fully understand yet. After the crash, I had been thinking of Scott, and how he probably had a fraction of a thought running through his head before the collision, it happened so fast. I also realized that I, along with thousands of others, witnessed the last, say, 5 seconds of this stranger’s life, and captured a photo of his trusty DHL funny car screaming down that track for the last time before things turned for the worst. It’s better knowing that Scott did not suffer, and he died doing what he loved to do. I pray for Scott’s family through this horribly tragic event, and I hope God lifts their heavy hearts. All NHRA fans and friends of Scott will always remember the legacy of him.
