Old vs New Nascar?
I started going to races in the 60’s with my father. We could buy a ticket on race day for $15 have hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for less than $5 total for both of us. Of course a new car in the show room was less than $4 or 5k, gas was $.30 or less, a coke was a dime. But then if you made over $3 per hour at your job you were doing darned well. Nascar then was an extravagant once in a while treat to see live. The races were on the radio and you felt like you were there. The cars were from the showrooms of the big 3.
The cars also had biased tires that were unreliable and came apart. The brakes were “drum” style and it took longer to slow down than to get up to speed. The roll cages were barely a roll bar if any. The helmets were little pots that would shatter if you dropped them on the ground. The drivers all got carbon monoxide poisoning at almost every race. The safety belts were lap or maybe a single shoulder harness.
In other words it was a different time and trying to compare it to now, the drivers to todays drivers and the price of the race is really irrelevant because today’s show is a different show and something that I enjoy immensely.
