Saturday Night at Richmond:

Tuesday May 06, 2008 @ 04:28 PM EDT

I’ve waited since saturday night to post this blog, not since the days, weeks and months following the death of the late, great Dale Earnhardt and the totally ignorant claims and accusations that Sterlin Marlin killed Dale, have I personally seen such an unwarranted clamour on nascar.com., and over what?? RACIN!! I’ll say it again RACIN!!! and short track racin to boot! I am totally freakin appalled at some of the uninformed, completely out of line opinions and comments about the race at Richmond, it speaks more about people and their non exististant abject objectivity than it does about my sport of choice. Ok …now for my own take…for whatever it’s worth.

The race saturday night was shapin up to be a one man show, Denny Hamlin was untouchable and it looked as if he was gonna lead every lap but one…..we’ll never know if thats what woulda happened, a right front tire and its innability to hold air changed the entire landscape of a race that i believed at the time would be a semi-borin display of one teams ability to “get-er-dun” and run away with the whole show…......Ha! Boy was I ever wrong!! With less that 50 laps to go Richmond became in my mind a race that will stand out for some time to come as one of the most exciting races I’ve had the pleasure to watch in quite some time…..no one will change my opinion on this subject…....no one.

I only have 4 problems with the outcome

1) I’m a Dale Jr. fan

2) I’m a Kyle Busch fan

3) I’m a Denny Hamlin fan

4) I’m a Clint Bowyer fan

That kinda puts me in a spot with no place to run to and no place to hide…......it also gives me a unique position to comment on the results without bias and without FANATICAL ONE-SIDED Bloviation and spinnin and twistin of the facts to suit my personal defense of my chosen driver.

Denny Hamlin called the right front flat on the radio…......the spotter looked at it from atop the stands and said it looked good to him…..the crew chief told him to keep goin…..Denny did as he was told. When the tire finally gave out and he started losein positions I believe the young man panicked as he saw his WIN….....and domination slippin thru his hands and made a decision to cut his losses as best he knew how, as others have done in the past to try to save their race…........ by, throwin a piece of roll bar paddin on the track, throwin one of their gloves out on the track, or spinnin out on purpose…........ all to get a caution and maybe not go a lap or two down. Why??...cause he wanted to …...WIN….........I dont approve or agree…....but I understand…............ nascar held him for 2 laps….....case closed. Conspiracy theories??? Pffffffffffttt…....gain thyself a grip.

Kyle Busch saw that he only had one chance to win the race….....WIN…....the race…......just like everybody else on the track…his one desire…....to …...WIN …......the race…....Dale was runnin a high line and there was only one place to go…..low and inside…...... with the laps countin down he had to do it with INTENT…....last chance to win the race…..didnt quite work out the way he planned….....the rest is history.

Dale Jr. knew Kyle was comin for him….....no delusions that it was gonna be a fight for those last few laps and he knew there was only one way to try and hold that hard drivin, determined kid back and not let him take away somethin he himself needed badly…....to …....WIN …........the race…....so he too did what he needed to do to hold his position and gain that coveted spot in victory lane….....he pinched down on the guy tryin to pass him, hopefully keepin the man tryin to take his …....WIN…... from him behind him for just a few more laps…......thats all he needed….....a few more laps…..no more slump….....shut up the critics and nay-sayers…..just a few more laps. It didnt work out the way he planned either, his dejection and demeanor in his post race interview said it all…....but his words said more…....(not a quote but my interpretation)......if I had been Kyle …..I woulda done the exact same thing….....it’s called racin for the ….....WIN…..........you can take that to the bank.

Clint Bowyer probably was hopin against hope that the two cars in front of him would do somethin …..anything…......that would let him get by them for the…....WIN…......((Ya seein a pattern here??))........and was most likely shocked when they collided and he slipped past em and into first on his way to that spot…......THE spot…......victory circle…...the ONLY spot to be after the checkers…........Congrats to a great race by Clint, he sure got overlooked in the fray that followed. Which goes to show that even when a nice guy finishes first…....sometimes they still finish last.

You can blame who ya want…......I dont care….....you can nit-pick every little detail…......wont change what I saw one iota….....you can gripe and complain. blame and point fingers all ya want….........I saw a freakin great race saturday night….........I’m hopin to see more of the same.
