My thoughts
1: C – Lack of competetive races, coupled with TOYOTA. A lot of people I know that used to be die-hard nascar fans, no longer watch because they hate Toyota. I, for one, could care less … but that’s just me.
2&3: I think are certainly both due to recession.
Since you got on the subject, I really don’t agree with Army/Navy/Air Force sponsering Nascar … I think that 10 or 15 million dollars could be much better spent somewhere else. I mean, seriously, who doesn’t know about the fricken army?

Hope to see Harvick or Jr. in victory lane this coming Sunday
Hi all,
I am a huge Jr. fan and also of Kevin Harvick. I had the pleasure of meeting both. I met Kevin at an event in Leesport, Pa. I used to own a Nascar store, so I got to go to a lot of events where the drivers were. I met Dale Jr. in 2006 at our local track. He was there with, Truex, Biffle, Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader. They were all great to the fans. I was a dedicated fan of Dale Earnhardt and had the good fortune of being at the Daytona 500 in 1998. Dale even signed my tickets after the race. What a treasure. If you go to my member profile, I have a lot of photos posted. My favortie is the one with Richard Petty. I root for Jr. and Harvick but like Smoke, Sadler and Kasey Kahne. If you ever get to meet Kasey, you will find him to be one of the nicest guys ever. He was at our local track in 2005 and just mingled with the fans. I met him again in 2007 in Daytona, still the same. He is just one teriffic guy. I am hoping that Jr. gets his championship this year. Even though Kyle Busch is leading, I think that will change. Nascar is looking at the engines in the Nationwide series. They took the engine from Carl Edwards and the #20 Gibbs car. They found that the #20 had 21 more horse power than Edwards car. They just pulled more engines last week. It was on Nascar.com if you missed it. Nascar has admitted in giving Toyota a bit of an edge but I think it backfired. What do all of you think? Busch had only one win last year and led only 155 laps. This year, 7 wins already and over 1065 laps led. Makes you wonder. I like an even playing field. I can’t wait for the Brickyard. As much as I like Jr. and Harvick, my money is on Stewart. Nice talking to you all. Have a great week. My nickname is the Queen.

I have to agree
that NASCAR shot itself in the foot. Other companies should be allowed to sponsor including AT&T. For us its freedom of choice and I think the owners of the car should be able to choose also.

Nascar in a recession?
I believe we all are. Not just Nascar. And as far as empty seats, I was in Chicago last night and there were NO empty seats. I’ll be in Indy in 2 weeks and there are never empty seats there either.
The sponsorship stuff happens every few years, recession or not. I’m sure the tighter economy is forcing companies to look twice at their budgets. Racing is expensive. Regardless of what decade you look at, it was all relative. Twenty years ago, we didn’t see cars with multiple sponsors. It was the Skoal Bandit, and the Mountain Dew car, etc. Now they’re all put on the car based on the percentage they sponsor. Sometimes, they’ll be brought out for a race or two as the primary sponsor (for that race) such as last night Jeff Gordon was sponsored by Nicorette and Dupont was shuffled to a lesser position on the car.
Personally, I think Nascar has shot itself in the foot with the series sponsorships limiting the companies available to sponsor the teams. After this year, no more cell phone/wireless providers to compete with Sprint/Nextel. Childress’s deal with AT&T ends this year because of that. Nationwide is sponsoring and after this year (or next year) Geico has to pull out of that series as well as any other insurance companies.
It’s all a merry-go-round.
