The Beauty of a Race, A story.

Monday October 13, 2008 @ 08:19 AM EDT

“Gentlemen start your engines” it all starts at that moment. Radio check, tighten the belts, then make the way behind the pace car to the track. The track, surrounded by fans and a million different distractions, but they can’t pay attention to that, they have to feel the car, check all gauges, check all radio function. The pace car moves off the track then it happens- from 60 to 120 in a blink of an eye “green green green” the spotters yell. In the middle of the pack there’s a man behind the wheel, his spotter tells him it’s clear to move and in that moment his purpose is clear, everything in his body is ignited with adrenaline. He darts down inside to make his first move “At your door, at your door, still therrre…and your clear” says the voice from above. A position is gained. Methodically making split decisions with his spotter guiding him through, he moves. Up the track, down in the inside, between two cars who were side by side, but he creates a hole and passes thru, lap after lap a position is gained. Soon he is there, up front 5th place everything around him going 190 miles an hour but not here, not in his seat. He’s belted in, hands firmly on the wheel all he can see is the way in between or around the guy in front of him and it is all he sees. All he hears is his man high above, his guardian. "Caution is out, caution is out " says the voice, then the other voice comes in “How’s it doin’?” Crew chief and driver plan the pit stop and make the car fit the driver so 5th place can only be a memory. The 13 seconds on pit road in controlled chaos is over, now he has to race to keep or better the current place. He makes it and makes it look easy. He’s in 4th now thanks to the pit crew. “Great job guys” the driver thanks his team. The field goes green again and as soon as it does he jumps two places immediately “door, door, corner, still there, you’re clear, you’re clear” the guardian says, two down…one to go. He moves up with what looks like the fastest car on the track and stalks the car in front of him, makes a plan in his head, it clicks and there he goes, side by side with the current leader then suddenly the car jets forward and he’s in the lead. Some say it’s magic and at times it can seem that way. It’s a team and a driver and a car that all perform as one. I suppose it is magic. This is what I see and hear when I watch Kyle Busch race. (as I’m sure you do when watching your favorite driver) This is why I love racing.
