Ok yes it’s a bit warmer than it was in February, but still it doesn’t discount the fact that the CoT seems to take to the restrictor plate tracks better than most places so far.
I mean look at the facts, sure Kyle Busch dominated a majority of this year’s Daytona 500 but there was plenty of action all over the track, all the way to the end.
Add to that the fact that if not for Daytona, stock car racing in general would likely not be anywhere near where it is today.
Plenty of good moments from the past here with last year’s finish between Jamie McMurray and Kyle Busch being a good example.
As for this weekend, I think will finally be the day when Toyota breaks through at Daytona in the Cup series. As to who will do it, don’t automatically think it will solely be Joe Gibbs Racing who does it. Brian Vickers has a solid record here and at Talladega and don’t forget Michael Waltrip has 3 wins here and is coming off a great 2nd place run at New Hampshire, so the momentum could be on his side.
As for Chevrolet, isn’t about time that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. seals the deal in a plate race? It has certainly been awhile since his last official win (no I don’t count the Shootout or the Duels). Ford will have a hard time to backup its win last year I’m afraid and I’m not convinced Dodge can backup its victory from the 500 either.
If there is to be a surprise, the likely culprits could be Boris Said or Sterling Marlin, if they qualify which is not necessarily a lock. Said, of course won the pole and then nearly the race a few years backs and Sterling although not as competitive as he was before the tragic crash in Kansas in ‘02, is still capable of a good run at Daytona as is the Phoenix Racing team he drives for.
Enjoy the action this weekend!
