Hey, TrackPass users!
The question was asked whether the in-car audio is censored and if there is an audio delay. The short answers are “Yes” and “Yes.”
Censoring
The company that transmits the in-car audio from the track to NASCAR.com is required by NASCAR and the teams to censor the in-car audio. This is direct from Mike Helton himself. As we get ready for the coming year, we will once again talk about censoring but it’s unlikely it can be removed.
Unofficially, things do slip through. I’ve heard plenty of things that shouldn’t have passed. A string of obscenities is very likely to get picked up and censored but the occasional “&^$!>?” does get through.
Audio Delay
That brings us to the delay in the audio transmission. There is a delay and that is due to 2 things: physics and censoring.
On average, the audio delay is about 6 seconds behind the TV transmission.
The in car audio goes from the driver to a transmitter at the track; from the track to a censor location; then from the censor it is transmitted to NASCAR.com and your computer.
Without the censoring (see reason for that above) the audio would not be delayed behind TV.
We’ve done as much as possible to shorten the delay but sound transmission and censoring takes time and unfortuantely we haven’t found a way to beat physics or remove NASCAR’s censor requirement.
If you have TiVo, you can pause your TV and then run it to match TrackPass.
The good thing about the audio delay is that if you see something happen on TV, you can switch audio quickly and hear what the driver is saying.
I hope this answers your questions & please keep them coming! We’re already getting ready for Daytona and your feedback helps shape next year’s improvements.

Thanks for the response but...
I pay to hear my favorite driver, Tony Stewart, interact with his crew. If that interaction includes emotional, graphic language, well so be it. It is that emotion and drive that brings fans to NASCAR. So when I read this comment from your response to me: We had a very difficult time getting Tony Stewart’s audio added to the applications and part of that was the promise to be extra diligent in censoring him. I was annoyed that I may not be getting my money’s worth out of Trackpass. Also, as mentioned in below, I’ve heard a driver’s radio comment on TV that I didn’t hear through Trackpass. I think NASCAR should quit trying to be a “Disney”-like, autocratic protector of family values and allow me the freedom to decide if I need that protection.

I believe
Since it is a paid service it should come through un-censored.
There should be a filter available for those who want to use one but otherwise I look at it like cable TV or Satellite radio.
Please do more to bring us un-censored true radio communication.
I have even had it on a particular driver listening and they have played a part of his radio transmission on the air.
Most times it is a part that I have never heard before.
Also with most drivers I believe there must be a total filter on to save someone money or someone is being lazy because most races there are at least 10 drivers listed that will just be blank humming tome coming across.
Again, it is a pay service. Let us decide when we want it filtered or not.
I would bet it would gander more subscriptions if it was a true radio broadcast and not what your team thinks we should hear.
Oh and on the 6 second delay?
I wish it was only 6 seconds. At most mile and a half tracks it is at least a lap behind.

Interestingly.....
I listen to the audio of the Officials in one windows and a driver in another. Often the spotters are alerting the drivers that the yellow is out before I hear the officals say “Put it out” which seems to be the “official call” to go yellow.
