Here's my suggestion
Totally agree with you. Let’s face it – the Chase points system isn’t working. I realize everyone is sick of hearing new points system suggestions but hear me out. Am I suggesting going back to the Winston Cup points system? – possibly, but I would rather see this:
1. Run the first 26 races as is just like we do now.
2. After the 26th race cut the top 11 drivers for the Championship “Playoffs”
If NASCAR wanted a true “Playoff” system, let’s give them one and actually eliminate drivers every week
3. reset the points of the top 11 so it is proportional to the actual difference in points – example – Jeff Gordon held a 300 some point lead after Richmond this year. For ease of math let’s just say it was 300 take 15% of that – 45 points – that is his new lead. It rewards a driver to be consistent during the regular season but still tightens the championship race.
4. Now, after the first of the final 10 races, whoever is in 11th place in points after the race is eliminated from championship contention. It is now a 10 man Chase. The 11th place man is now thrown into the rest of the pack, say 20 points ahead of 12th.
5. After the 2nd of the final 10 eliminate whoever is in 10th place. And so on and so forth until heading into the final race of the season there are just 2 drivers eligible assuming they are mathematically eligible.
This system makes it much more challenging for the guys in 6th-11th place in points to win the championship, which is how it should be. It also allows guys outside the top 11 after 26 races to still secure a top 10 points finish for the year like in ‘05 for Jeff Gordon or ‘06 for Tony Stewart. Sorry for the long read, I just hope NASCAR finds a better points system than the one they are currently using.
