my opinion of chevrolet teams lobbying for the new engine is this; how about rather than giving the chevy teams some more hp, why not remove some from the dominating teams, namely toyota!
it may not be obvious to all, but, to me, who has been following nascar since the mid 60’s, one car cant dominate like the toyota’s have so far this year in the nationwide series without some kind of advantage!
it was said in february at daytona, the toyota’s had a 30 hp advantage, at the rear wheels, in the cup cars, but, they tried to explain that away. but, no one who has seen this sport for the 40+ years i have, can believe it isnt at least partly true. otherwise why would the chevy teams, who won 2/3 of all the races in 2007, be complaining about needing 15 more hp? and if they are asking for the new engine to be allowed in the nationwide series, you can bet they will have more than 15 hp if it is approved. as we have seen in the past, the faster the cars go on the track, the less passing and actual racing we fans see!
it makes no sense to me that the teams who havent won on a restrictor plate track but 3 times in the last 8 years, arent getting something to help them be more competitive. if you dont know what i am talking about, check the winning manufacturer of the daytona and talladega races since 2000. ford drivers, even with the historical yates hp, hardly lead any laps and cant pass under green for the lead and hold it for more than a few laps as evidenced by the total amount of laps any ford drivers have led since 2000. i cant believe the yates engine builders forgot how to make restrictor plate hp! i believe dale jarrett won at daytona in feb of 2000. greg biffle won a fuel mileage race in july 2005, i believe, and, jamie mcmurray won last july, 2007, at daytona. thats a total of 30 races since 2000 and ford drivers have won 3!
ford teams have not gotten any new engine parts since 2003 i believe, and, toyota comes in and throws all the money in the world at their r&d and engine developers and dominate in less than 2 years!
i know i am mixing cup and nationwide series comments here, but, just trying to make a point.
so, dont give teams more hp, take something away from the teams who have the most.

Two holes in your theory
(1) Toyota has some of the very best engine technictions that money can buy (world wide)!
(2) Hendrick Motor Sports ..Last year. Their chevy’s won HALF of the races last year! Not almost half or even close to half, but HALF! of the races (thats 18) So….Does that mean Hendrick had some great advantage? Mybe they should forfiet that trophy?
Now just like Toyota, it wasn’t a manufacturer’s sweep either. Chevy didn’t do that great at all the Chevy teams. Likewise, If Toyoyta had more horsepower than all the rest, then explain…where is Blaney, Mikey, Ruetiman….
It’s not a Manufacturer thing. Just some engine techs who did their homework! And look at the drivers!.....It’s not all of them but just two of them. The very same two who push it and go to the limits of what their cars will handle. The very same two drivers that are being constantly blasted for being too agressive. Maybe these two guys and their teams have finally put a finger on what the driver needs to do and what the car can really handle!
Besides, you can take any engine..ANY ENGINE.. put three beside each other and without changing any parts at all, give all three different amounts of horsepower just by the way you advance or retard the timing, the fire of the plugs, carb adjustments and how the airflow get in!
