Did Bobby Labonte make the right decision to re-sign with Petty?

Petty Enterprises made news this week, all of it good. Boston Ventures, a private equity firm, came on board as a partner bringing in much-needed money to the organization and Bobby Labonte, the 2000 Cup Series champion, signed a four-year extension with the team to stay in the No. 43 Dodge.

The Petty cars haven’t been competitive in quite some time and while the partnership with Boston Ventures will help, will it produce results in time for Labonte to see them? Read both sides of the argument and then weigh in with your take.

    yes

Both Petty Enterprises and Bobby Labonte made the right decisions. Petty is finally moving into the new era as it wants to become a top contending team once again. Bobby wants to be the driver to return the 43 car to victory lane numerous times and I know he wants to win a title in that same 43 car. His brother won 2 titles 12 years apart. I have no doubt that Bobby can win a 2nd title the next 4 years. Bobby is a world class driver, proven by his record with Petty Enterprises to date. Inarguably one of the bottom teir teams, while with them Bobby has earned decent amount of top 15’s, a feat considering he was driving far inferior equipment than the rest of the field. Put Bobby in a top machine with a good team behind him (he’s got one) and now with funding and testing and engineering, there is no doubt we will all see a sharp jump in Petty Enterprises performance in the 2009 season. Go Petty!

Good choice for one of the best drivers in cup...

I think Petty made an excellent decision to bring in B.V. and sign Bobby to another 4 years. I’ve been a fan of Bobby’s from the very start of his career. From the good times almost a decade ago, to the bad times with his last few years with Gibbs. And I’ll argue with anyone that he is one of the best drivers in the sport today. The problem has been equipment, and his several different crew chiefs he has been through in the past 5 years or so. I’m hoping that the King will prioritize the biggest problem that they seem to have right now with the new monies coming in, and that would be to start building motors inhouse instead of relying on motors from other teams. They need power to compete with the other teams. And I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m sick and tired of Hendrick, Gibbs, and Rouch winning every stupid weekend. I’m very glad to see Bobby make the decision to stay with Petty, and I have a feeling that these new funds coming in will awaken this sleeping giant of a team. Not to mention Bobby who wants to win again so bad. Bobby is a finess driver who always seems to get caught up in other’s mistakes on the track. Build those motors and give him the power he needs in his car to blow by those Hendrick idiots.

Is it three top fives or only two?

Someone has their facts wrong! I think that Bobby doesn’t like to be a little fish in a big pond but prefers to be a big fish in a little pond. He was with Gibbs driving the Interstate Batteries 18 but seemed to be always overshadowed by fellow champion Tony Stewart. To perform, drivers need to be comfortable with the crew, with the car and with the organization. Bobby is surely contented, otherwise he wouldn’t have stayed with Petty, and now the one piece of the puzzle that was missing (money) is in place it seems to me that the perfect situation for Labonte to win has been put into place. Only time will tell.

    shoulda went with Childress ...

I’m a huge Bobby fan but am frustrated with his decision to stay at Petty Enterprises. If he really wanted to focus on winning races and potentially a 2nd championship, why wouldn’t he have went with Childress — with all 3 drivers in the top 12 in points? Childress has consistently been competitive … Petty may get there again, but it won’t be anytime real soon. I do have a lot of respect for the Petty’s, though, and I’ll always be a Bobby fan!

    very good choice

I think this works on some good levels to stay with Petty. Performance-wise, he is well in the top-20 with this smaller team, only a couple hundred out of the chase. Also, he is marketable, albeit not one of the kids going around now, but still a marketable guy that many people respect.

    good choice

I think bobby made the right choice,he is getting older and with all the young talent out there finding a new ride with a copetitive team would be difficult
