*Starting today I would like to be able to create a Blog on The Tech.issues in the COT car and from Maker to Maker,Part to Part, anything to do with set ups,tires,h.p. anything *“TECHY” on a weekly basis.
I figure If I start one today and it stays open for comments and thoughts for a week at a time,we could cover endless items..Now I don’t think I could come up with all the subjects and issues that are out there so I would like the crew to get involved with this weekly blog,by summiting a subject and or issue with something “TECHY”,and summit it as a blog for the crew members to hopefully learn something and to hear what other think on the subject or issues.
So here’s my first “TECHY TALK” SUBJECT:SHOCKS & SPRINGS.
During last weeks race at Loudon on the prer-race show,we were shown a few things about the shocks and springs on the car and what they can “play” with to inhance the effects for a better, tighter, loser,or what ever needs adjusting to make the car preform at it’s best and whats best for the track, conditions,Driver preference.and so on.
They showed use some rubber spacers of different thickness’s that alows the shock to travel less,or more or what ever they are trying to achieve,The way I took it was this was a determined starting point per track, conditions, preference and so on,The larger the spacer the less travel sets the car tighter,or less inserts for a loser set up,and they have several ways they can go as needed throughout the race.
Rather easy for the tire changer to remove or replace a spacer as after the tire is off they slide one or two off/on to tighten/losen the car as needed.
Now with this they also included the springs as another topic that works with the shocks,Springs come in several strengths soft and spongy-hard and rigid,This also adusts the travel of the shock,by using a harder Spring the Shock travels at a much tighter set up,and of course the softer the Spring the looser the set up is,So with both the shock and Spring being adjusted by these spacer and springs.
The question is just how much do these items really play into the over all set up of the car?
Now we have the question lets hear from you,you let me know what your thoughts are,and please leave your prefered topic will be….Enjoy let’s talk it over and see where this goes…

Great Topic Dog
Springs are important on many vehicles, except farming tractors and others. The worst part about a spring is having one break. I had one break on my car earlier this year. Lucky for me Ford had a recall on them and I didn’t pay a thing to have them replaced. Replacement cost can be well over a few hundred dollars. The recall was the upside. The downside was driving around on the broken spring for a week. If that spring decided to somehow break even more, it could have hit my tire and caused me to have an accident. For me an accident is not an option. Neither is not having a car to drive. So to make a long story short, springs are a key part of your vehicle and can have so many problems.

Let me see if
maybe I just might be right,if not please inform me otherwise…
Wedges are used between the spring coils to expand them and semi make the springs a little more rigid,The jack screw itself ,I think is the way they compress the spring, which is done thru the backtrunk area, tighten to stiffn’,losen or expand to soften?

I would think that because a "stiff" car is loose
which translates to “fast” you would want a shock package that is compressed fully on the straight but would soften just a tad when cracking the trottle to get you started into the corner. Roll through and then be fully compressed from the center off.

they are very
important they control maximum height of splitter and they also keep the splitter from bouncing off the ground they help the car turn and they help it stick to the track of course there are other factors that contribute to all of these things to but shocks and bump stops and the shims play a very big part

"Raising hand and waving it"
teacher, teacher, I have a question. So what are wedges? And what is a Jack Screw? Or have I got the wrong thing?

I am
thinking these items would be tweaking items. As we know Nascar preety much tells the teams what shocks to use.

You got me on that one!
I have no idea, I was only guessing.
But considering they all have the same body, the same chassis, and with few exceptions, are pretty much the same- I’d think they wer e the same for each car other than what a prticular driver might like.
But then theres Coil bind and the other. I wouldn’t recognize either one if it up and bit me on the A….
